Frequently Asked Questions

Below are some of the common questions we often get asked about volunteering. Click on each question to view the answer.

How do I become a volunteer?

It's easy to volunteer your time and skills to Work Equality. Simply contact us when you are ready to commit your time to Work Equality. Our volunteer member will provide you with further information and then set up an informal interview. During the informal interview our volunteer member will match your skills and experiences to one of our many opportunities. If you and our volunteer member both feel that the role is right for you, you will be offered the position. Because you may be working with vulnerable adults and children, we will ask you for a Criminal Records Bureau disclosure. Also, if you are under 18, we will require authorisation from your parent or guardian before we can give you the volunteer opportunity.

How much time can I give?

The amount of time you give to Work Equality will depend on the type of role you are assigned to and your availability. Our volunteers vary in how much time they volunteer for us. Some of our volunteers only come in for a few hours, some once a week, some volunteer everyday, and others volunteer for our monthly or yearly events only. We try to work with you in matching your availability to our needs.

What skills do I need

Our volunteers possess various skills. The skills that you need will depend on the volunteering role that you do. Some of our roles require technical knowledge, such as the ability to use computers and internet. Other roles need unique skills, such as the ability to speak in public, access funding, and manage campaigns. Furthermore, some of our roles call for excellent personal skills and communication. In addition, while volunteering for Work Equality, you will have the opportunity to develop and gain new skills from your supervisor, other volunteers or Work Equality staff members.

What will my responsibilities be?

Your responsibilities will depend on the role you fulfill. Your responsibilities may involve a range of tasks and activities such as administrative work, campaigning, fund raising, legal work, or becoming friends with the individuals with disabilities that we work for. We also have special events throughout the year which involve various responsibilities, such as attending conferences and workshops during disability week.

Will I be given training?

Training and support will be provided to all of our volunteers in order to successfully fulfil their roles and responsibilities. Our staff will provide you with any role specific training that you may need.

Can I volunteer if I’m under age 18?

Yes, you can volunteer if you are under age 18 but some of our roles do have age restrictions because they require working with vulnerable adults or children. Additional information about specific requirements can be obtained by contacting us.

Will I be reimbursed for my expenses?

Work Equality will be able to reimburse you for out-of-pocket expenses which directly relate to your volunteering position. You will be entitled to reimbursement of all reasonable expenses, but you have to produce receipts and bus/underground tickets and complete a simple claim form.
